Driving licence in a rush
Today, I have been able to experience the absolutely brilliant feeling that you get, when you finally hold your driving licence for motorcycles in your own hands. I’m sure it was the right decision.
Not only because the training hours were so much fun (I’ve really been looking forward to it every time, feeling exited like a little kid). The thing is also that it will probably be of great importance for our future life of travelling: Because from now on, we can both ride. And if there should be any accident in which one of us is seriously injured, the other one can take over the motorcycle. It’s a security plus.
I knew that someday I would get my driving licence, too. I wasn’t in a hurry, though. And it seemed to me a good alternative to get a license abroad. But when I was looking up the details, I had to find out that you can get a (duly) driving licence, if you live in the particular country. Although we are not going to live in Germany for a long time, we probably also won’t be staying in one of the countries that we will be travelling through. Above all not for at least 185 days, which are necessary when it comes to the approval of the driving licence in Germany. Besides that, it is not unusual that one must also repeat the theoretical or practical test.
Well, it is certainly not the badest idea to learn the riding of a motorcycle properly. Still, it was not that easy to make this decision. The purchse of a German licence leaves a big hole in our (realtively small) budget. But after all, some things are more important than money.
So I’ve acquired my licence in a rush – at the speed of about 6 weeks. The fact that it worked pretty well and real quickly was not only the time pressure that was quite large due to the upcoming cold-wet weather of German autumn. In particular, it was my grandiose driving instructor Wolfgang, who made everything possible for me (Wolfgang, you are the best!).
And so it happened that we left the local driving licence office of Marburg today with three driving licences in our hands. In addition to my driving licence, we managed the issuing of international driving licences. You only need your German license, a passport, a picture and a few bucks. After 5 minutes, you can take the international license with you. Easy! However, It should be noted that the (admittedly quite large) licences are valid only in connection with the German driving licence for a total of three years.
Well, the big ride can beginn soon… 😉
