The last story ends in Lima where we made it to the workshop after a bitter fight with the sick Tiger. While the cat is in treatment now, we welcome our friend Alex from Germany who is visiting us. Before Alex arrived, we asked him, of course, what he would like to see and experience in Peru. But Alex is a very adaptable and uncomplicated travelmate: “I will do anything you are normally also doing”, he just said.
When we arrive in Peru, the country directly shows us its best side: we get to Juliaca, probably the largest shithole of whole South America.
The Tiger is in the workshop now, waiting for spare parts. And what can we do meanwhile? Right, travel of course! So, we start a backpack trip to the North of Chile from Santiago.
After the day at the foot of the volcano Descabezado, we leave early in the morning. We want to use the newly gained energy to move forward more than what is planned for a day. We couldn’t climb the volcano, therefore, we’d like to make it to the next hot thermal baths today.
When we start walking with our heavy-loaded backpacks, I’m a little restless. This trek is different than usual. For days, we will be on our own, see no other soul, and follow a largely unmarked path alone with the help of map and compass.
